After completing his schooling at Chopasani School and graduation from Jaswant College, Jodhpur, in 1947, Shaitan Singh began his military career by joining the Durga Horse of the former Jodhpur State as an officer cadet. He trained at the Officers Training School in Poona from August 1947 to July 1949. Subsequently, he served with the Umed Kotah Infantry and the 20 Rajput (Jodhpur Sardar Infantry) before receiving a permanent commission in the Indian Army and joining the 13 Kumaon Regiment in May 1954.

Battle of Rezang La

Major Shaitan Singh is best known for his leadership during the Battle of Rezang La in the Sino-Indian War of 1962. On 18 November 1962, Singh commanded Charlie Company of the 13 Kumaon Regiment, deployed at Rezang La, a high mountain pass in Ladakh at an altitude of about 16,400 feet. The company, consisting mainly of Ahir soldiers from Haryana, faced an overwhelming attack by a much larger Chinese force.

Despite extreme cold, lack of proper winter clothing, and difficult terrain, Singh and his men defended their position with extraordinary courage. Throughout the battle, he moved among the platoons, encouraging his troops while actively engaging the enemy. Charlie Company repulsed multiple Chinese assaults before being overwhelmed.

Major Shaitan Singh was severely wounded but refused evacuation to avoid risking his men’s lives. He continued to lead until he died fighting. Out of 123 soldiers, 114 were killed, and several others captured or wounded. The company inflicted heavy casualties on the Chinese, reportedly killing over 1,300 enemy soldiers.

Honors and Legacy

For his exceptional bravery and leadership, Major Shaitan Singh was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military honor. The company also received multiple awards, including eight Vir Chakras and four Sena Medals. Charlie Company was later renamed “Rezang La Company” in honor of their sacrifice.

A memorial at Rezang La stands to commemorate the soldiers' valor and sacrifice. The official citation praises Major Shaitan Singh’s courage, leadership, and devotion to duty in the face of overwhelming odds.
