Katoch
Katoch is a prominent Rajput clan of the Chandravanshi Kshatriya lineage. Traditionally, the Katoch Rajputs have resided in the Trigarta Kingdom, an ancient region that includes present-day Jalandhar, Multan, and parts of modern Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu.
History
The Katoch dynasty is considered one of the oldest surviving royal dynasties in the world. They are mentioned in ancient Hindu epics such as the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, where they are referred to as the rulers of Trigarta. In the Mahabharata, Raja Susarma Chandra of the Katoch lineage is noted for fighting Arjuna, as an ally of Duryodhana and an enemy of the Virat and Matsya kingdoms.
The Katochs are also noted in the war records of Alexander the Great, where an Indian ruler near Kangra, a Katoch king is referenced. Historically, the clan has been renowned for its swordsmanship and martial prowess.
The dynasty traces its origins to Rajanaka Bhumi Chand, who is also credited with founding the revered Jwalaji Temple in Himachal Pradesh. Among the most celebrated rulers of the clan was Maharaja Sansar Chand II, known for his patronage of art and architecture.
