Kachwaha
The Kachhwahas (also spelled Kachhawa, Kachhwaha, or Kachavaha) are a Suryavanshi Rajput clan that historically ruled the region of Dhoondhar, later known as Amber and Jaipur. They trace their lineage to the ancient Solar Dynasty and claim descent from King Kush, the son of Rama, hero of the Ramayana.
History of Kachhwaha
According to bardic tradition and genealogical texts such as the Kachhavamsha Mahakavya and Kurma-Vilas, the Kachhwahas migrated from Central India to Rajasthan. The dynasty’s founder in Dhoondhar was Dulha Rai (also known as Dhola Rai or Duleh Rai). Dulha Rai is believed to have descended from the Kachchhapaghata clan, which ruled regions around the Chambal River during the 10th–12th centuries CE. These rulers had established capitals at Gwalior, Dubkund, and Narwar.
There is scholarly debate about whether Dulha Rai came from Gwalior or Narwar, with sources differing on the point. However, he eventually established control over Dhoondhar, thereby founding the Kachhwaha dynasty of Rajasthan.
Early Rulers
The founder Dulha Rai was succeeded by Kakildev, whose reign was marked by the consolidation of power and territorial expansion. According to tradition, his coronation took place in VS 1093 (AD 1037). He captured Amber from the Susawat Meenas and extended control over surrounding areas held by Meena and Yadava chieftains.
