The Jadon, also spelled Jadaun, are a prominent Rajput clan in India, belonging to the Chandravanshi (Lunar) dynasty. They trace their lineage to the Yaduvanshi line, which claims descent from the legendary King Yadu and ultimately from Lord Krishna. Recognized among the 36 Royal Clans of Rajputs, the Jadaun Rajputs have historically held important roles in northern India, especially in regions like Mathura, Bayana, and Karauli.

The princely state of Karauli, founded in 1348 CE by Raja Arjun Pal, became a notable center of Jadaun rule. Earlier, Maharaja Vijaypal of Bayana is recorded to have resisted the Ghaznavid invasions, emphasizing the martial legacy of this lineage.

Origin and Lineage

The Jadauns identify as part of the Yaduvanshi division of the Chandravanshi dynasty. According to Puranic traditions, the Yaduvanshis descend from Yadu, the eldest son of King Yayati, and are associated with the Braj Region, the traditional homeland of Lord Krishna.

Their name is often linked linguistically to variations like Jadu, Jadava, and Yadava, with “Jadaun” considered a derivative of “Yadava.” The Bhati Rajputs of Jaisalmer also trace their roots to the Yaduvanshi line, establishing a broader kinship among several Rajput clans who share this origin.

Related and Sub-Clans

While the Jadaun form a distinct clan, they are part of a larger group of Yaduvanshi Rajputs. Other notable clans within this category include:

  • Bhati/Bhatti (Jaisalmer)
  • Jadeja
  • Raksel
  • Samma
  • Chudasama
  • Chokker (Chonker)

These clans, while geographically and politically diverse, often claim shared descent from the Yadava lineage and Lord Krishna.

Historical Achievements

Establishment of Kingdoms

The Jadaun Rajputs played a key role in founding and ruling several territories:

  • Bayana Fort was restored under Raja Vijaypal Ji, who defended the region from early Islamic invasions.
  • Raja Timanpal Ji contributed to Jain architecture and constructed the Timangarh Fort.
  • Raja Arjun Pal officially founded Karauli in 1348 CE, which later became a major princely state.

Military Legacy

According to local records like the Khyat of Karauli, Maharaja Vijaypal Ji is said to have fought and won 36 battles, reflecting the martial character of the clan. During the Mughal period, the Jadauns expanded their influence in regions such as Hathras, often overtaking lands held by other zamindar groups.

Architectural Contributions

The Jadauns were also known for their architectural endeavors. The Karauli City Palace, a 600-year-old structure, is an example of their contribution to Rajput architecture and heritage.

Present Day Status

Today, many Jadaun Rajput villages are located around Braj in Uttar Pradesh. The royal family of Karauli continues under Maharaja Krishna Chandra Pal Deo Bahadur, who ascended the symbolic throne in 1984. He is considered the 43rd king in Karauli’s dynastic line and the 88th descendant of Lord Krishna, according to family tradition.

Royal families of Karauli and Jaisalmer (Bhati Rajputs) continue to maintain their heritage, with several forts converted into heritage properties.

Notable Rulers

Some of the prominent kings of the Jadaun dynasty include:

  • Maharaja Jayendrapal Ji
  • Maharaja Vijaypal Ji
  • Maharaja Timanpal Ji
  • Maharaja Arjun Pal Ji
  • Maharaja Gopal Das Ji
  • Maharaja Dharmpal Ji II
  • Maharaja Gopal Singh Ji
