The origin of the dynasty is traced back to its progenitor Guhadatta, a Kshatriya warrior of the 6th century CE. Guhadatta was the son of a general of the Maitreka dynasty who lost his life in battle. Following his father's death, Guhadatta’s mother committed sati, leaving the infant to be raised by a Brahmin priest. Sisodiya (also spelled as Sisodia) is one of the most prominent Suryavanshi clan of the Rajputs known for their valor, chivalry, and adherence to a strict code of honor. The Sisodias are a branch of the Guhilot dynasty and trace their lineage to the ancient ruling families of Mewar, in present-day Rajasthan.

Origin

The Sisodias claim descent from the Suryavanshi (solar) dynasty, tracing their mythical origins to "Kusha" the son of King Rama, the hero of the Hindu epic Ramayana. Historically, they emerged as a powerful force in the 8th century CE, when the Guhilots established themselves in the region of Mewar. The name Sisodia came into use in the 14th century, derived from Sisoda, a village near Udaipur, where the clan had a stronghold.

As Guhadatta was conceived in a cave, he was named “Guhadatta,” marking the beginning of the Guhila dynasty.

Bappa Rawal, a legendary king of the 8th century CE, is often credited with the expansion of the dynasty. He acquired Chittor Fort from Chitrangada Mori, a Parmar Rajput, whose daughter he married.

The House of Mewar, under the Sisodia banner, became one of the most illustrious clans of warriors among the Kshatriyas of India. It gave rise to legendary figures such as:

  • Rana Kumbhakarna
  • Maharana Sangram Singh
  • Maharana Pratap
  • Maharana Amar Singh

and many more who contributed to the valorous legacy of Mewar.
